What is Key Word Sign?
Key Word Sign (KWS) is the use of manual signs and natural gesture to support communication and participation in everyday life. It is designed for children and adults with communication difficulties and their communication partners.
Key Word Sign is used internationally and borrows the signs of the host country. In Australia the signs are borrowed from Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
The main principles of Key Word Sign are:
- Always speak while signing
- Speak in normal, grammatical sentences
- Only sign the key words of your message
- Use facial expression and body language to support your message
- Use directionality and placemat to add extra meaning
